INDIAN IDOL case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday restrained the West Bengal Police from executing an arrest warrant issued by a Darjeeling court against radio jockey Janardhan Nitin Brady, whose comments on Indian Idol Prashant Tamang sparked large-scale violence in Siliguri recently.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan asked the state police not to arrest the Delhi-based jockey till November 19, the day it hears his appeal against the order of the Calcutta High Court rejecting his anticipatory bail plea.

Senior advocate U U Lalit and Ajoy Roy mentioned the Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the Bench contending that he was entitled for the grant of anticipatory bail.
Brady had allegedly made some derogatory comments against Tamang on September 24 during a programme of an FM channel aired in Delhi, which enraged the Nepalese community in Darjeeling district from where the Indian idol hails.

The jockey has been accused of inciting violence under section 153A of IPC.
His lawyers said Brady had approached the High Court for anticipatory bail as he had never made the statements being attributed to him by media reports.

The army and BSF had to be called in to control the violence in Siliguri after Tamang's fans and local people clashed and torched several cars in September.

Indian idol fans clash

A bandh has been called for in Darjeeling on Saturday after fans of Indian Idol Prashant Tamang went on rampage in Siliguri.

They claim that they were upset with alleged derogatory comments made by a Delhi based radio jockey, but the real picture seems to be one of local vandalism. Now the West Bengal Chief Minister has called for action against the radio channel.

At least eight people were injured in clashes between fans of Tamang, who was recently crowned the winner of the third edition of Indian Idol, and a group of locals in West Bengal's Siliguri district.

About 5000 fans were carrying out a rally to protest against the alleged derogatory comments made against Tamang by the radio jockey.
The protesters entered into a scuffle with some patients and their relatives at the Siliguri District Hospital while on their way to lodge a complaint to the district administration.

The protesters have demanded that the FM broadcaster be arrested immediately and brought to Darjeeling hills for a trial within three days, failing which the Gorkhas would take ‘appropriate’ measures.
A curfew has also been imposed in the Siliguri sub-division. The West Bengal government has said that it will take legal action against the concerned FM station and the radio jockey
