Left explores options outside UPA

A crucial meeting of CPM's politburo got under way in Kolkata on Friday amid clear indications that Left was not just firm on its plan to punish the UPA government if it tried to operationalise the nuclear deal, but may have also begun exploring options which include voting against the government.

Senior Left sources told TOI that Left would ensure that government was in no position to operationalise the nuclear deal with the US and could even vote against the UPA regime on a no-trust motion. "We are not opposing the government for entertainment. What is the point of withdrawing if the nuclear deal is still signed. We do not believe in a minority government. We will vote against the government," a senior CPM source said before leaving for Kolkata to participate in the politburo and central committee meetings.

The remark takes on signficance in the light of a quiet meeting that CPM leaders had with leaders of Samajwadi Party and TDP in the Capital earlier this week. Leaders of Left as well as SP and TDP were unsually secretive about the meeting. In fact, an annoyed SP general secretary Amar Singh denied that it took place at all. "This is a figment of your fertile imagination," the usually amiable Singh snapped when asked about the Left-UNPA interaction. Left leaders were similarly tight-lipped.
