You may love your gol gappas and your vada paos but roadside eateries in Mumbai are being demolished after reports of the first cholera death during the monsoon.
Lunchtime in Mumbai's prime business district was more dramatic than usual.
Grabbing a bite took on a different meaning, with the civic authorities quite literally snatching away lunch during a demolition drive of roadside eateries.
Thanks to complaints of food contamination and a suspected case of cholera in the city.
Milind Shambharkar, Deputy Minicipal Commissioner, said, ''This is dangerous for public health especially in the monsoon. Hence we are doing this.''
The drive is aimed at keeping food cooked in unhygienic condition out of the public's reach. But civic officers stormed into the famous 'Khau Gallis' and everything else that got in their way.
Naturally, for those who swear by street food, it left a bitter aftertaste.
While some say that it is unhygienic but cheap, others opine that the real taste is on the footpath, not in hotels.
So, does this mean no more street snacks?
Not really, because these drives are as seasonal and as and regular as the monsoon itself.
The BMC is acting on an unreal assumption that contamination happens only in monsoon; neither those who eat this food, nor those who sell it expect the drive to be of any consequence.
