Assam Rifles on Wednesday gunned down three militats in Thoubal district in Manipur just few hours before the arrival of union home secretary Madhukar Gupta to the state to review the law and order situation there.
Official sources said AR personnel acting on a tip off raided Sora area in Thoubal and gunned down the militants.
It was, however, not known to which outfit the militants belonged to. In yet another incident unidentified militants exploded a powerful grenade at a fish shop in the market complex here. But there was no report of any casualty.
Later, Gupta accompanied by joint secretary union home ministry (north east) Naveen Verma, joint secretary border management G S Patnaik and director of north east-one A K Goyal met Governor S S Sidhu and Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh separately and discussed the present situation in the wake of increasing violence in the border state, the sources said.
