Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is on an official trip to Africa. He is out of India and almost out of the political mainstream as well. His precious Indo-US nuclear deal, a deal on which he had staked his personal prestige seems all but scuttled as the government gives in to the Left and sends signals that it may not begin negotiations with the IAEA after all.
The Left has said `no’ to the nuclear deal, ‘no’ to pension reform, ‘no’ to disinvetment, ‘no’ to agricultural reform, ‘no’ to FDI in retail. At the moment, the government of Manmohan Singh seems to be doing nothing. All it is doing is hanging on to power.Manmohan Singh spoke to US President George Bush in Nigeria to discuss the fate of the nuclear deal - fuelling reports the deal is dead
Does that mean Manmohan Singh is a lame-duck PM? Should he, in these circumstances, simply resign?Spokesperson, Congress, Jayanthi Natarajan, MP and CPI-M, Mohammad Salim debated the issue on Face The Nation with CNN-IBN's Sagarika Ghose.
Inglorious surrender to the Left
The Congress has been called the government of wimps. Its putting the deal on the back burner has been called an inglorious surrender to the Left. When the Congress decided not to take the Left on on the Indo-US nuke deal, did it also realise to what extent it was compromising the dignity and office of the Prime Minister who had staked so much on the deal?
