Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said he has made the state free of crime by eliminating "mafia gangs" which used to operate in the state.
"At one point of time, Gujarat was known for the various notorious mafia gangs which used to operate from the state," he said addressing a function organised by the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI) to felicitate him here on Saturday evening.
"The Latif gang and the other gangs operating in other parts of state used to extort money from businessmen and others," he said.
"Today the state has been completely freed of mafia gangs."
Modi said though he has ensured that peace and harmony prevailed in Gujarat, time and again he has been blamed for the (police) "encounters" in the state.
"There are people who have been criticising me by saying that Modi has killed Sohrabuddin (Sheikh)," he said while talking about the encounter where the alleged criminal was shot dead by the Gujarat's Anti-Terrorist Squad.
"A treasure of AK-47 (rifles) were found from Sohrabuddin's residence," Modi said.
