NRI Chivukula wins New Jersey Assembly polls

Indian American Upendra J. Chivukula (Democrat), Deputy Speaker and chair of the powerful Telecommunications and Utilities Committee, won the fourth consecutive two-year term to the New Jersey General Assembly from a constituency which has only 7 per cent South Asian.
In the elections held on Tuesday, Democrats retained control of the State legislature.

Chivukula is the first and the only Indian to be elected to the State Assembly. Recently, he was chosen by the NJ Chamber of Commerce for prestigious award of outstanding legislator for the legislation he had sponsored to help telecommunications and utilities industries in the State grow, but Seema Singh, another Indian American, lost heavily in her bid to the Senate in the polls.

A popular candidate, Chivukula was elected from 17th District which has 51 per cent Caucasian voters, 19 per cent African American, 16 per cent Hispanic and 14 per cent other communities, including 7 per cent South Asian.
