As Indo-US nuclear deal runs a rough patch, Russian nuclear support to the Kudankulam nuclear project in Tamil Nadu makes a progress as the second reactor is being installed.
It's a three hundred tonnes heavy core nuclear reactor and its installation marks the beginning of the critical phase in the Kudankullam nuclear power plant in the Tirunelvelli district.
This Rs 13,000 crore project includes two nuclear reactors and can produce 2000 MW power and is expected to be completed by June 2009.
S K Agrawal the Project Director said, ''This project is going to supply electricity to the entire southern region, that is all five states and the cost will be very, very competitive.''
Designed and supplied by Russia the cost of power production is expected to come down by thirty per cent from the estimated Rs 3 per unit to less than Rs 2.50.
Initially the Kudankulam project faced stiff opposition as local people apprehended environmental degradation and those who had given land demanded jobs
