Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, one of the country’s most famous bachelors, surely has a soft corner for women.
The BJP has fielded 26 candidates for the December elections and the Congress 14 till now.
Modi says he is committed to women's issues but the party's leadership also wants to cash in on the bachelor CM’s popularity among the female vote bank. "Women of Gujarat are completely behind Narendra Modi. Nobody can be better than Modi as far as women in the state are concerned," says Gitaben Patel, the BJP candidate in Sabarmati.
But there is more to the BJP's decision to include women than correcting the gender imbalance in politics. There are over a dozen seats where fighting between party leaders forced the BJP to field a compromise woman candidate.
The party had to field Maya Kodnani in Naroda though she is controversial because of her alleged role in the riots of 2002. Kodnani rejects allegations that she is a “compromise” candidate. "The BJP has taken this decision after serious consideration. It also shows the commitment that the party has towards women," she says.
