Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seen its political fortunes rising in 2007. Following the massive wins in the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, BJP and its allies rule in nine states north of the Vindhyas.
Earlier in the year, the BJP had won in Punjab and Uttarakhand and on Sunday, which was the 122nd foundation day of the Congress, it wrested Himchal Pradesh from the Grand Old Party.
BJP's surge has now seen four states in north India draped in saffron colour and the party's elation is understandable.
After all, post 2004 Lok Sabha defeat followed by internal strife, with some National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners even deserting the BJP, most political analysts had written off the party.
But now, it is the BJP, which wants the Congress to read the writing on the wall that good times for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) are over.
"UPA is looking downwards and the BJP is now moving up," an elated Venkaiah Naidu, celebrating the win in Himachal with BJP workers, said.
Even though most of the states in which the Congress lost power in 2007, anti-incumbency was a strong factor. But having won four states, the momentum is with the BJP and Congress needs to set its house in order.
"I am sure that something has gone wrong. That's why I have said that it is too early to analyse," Anand Sharma, Miniter of State for External Affairs, said.
And following the rout in Gujarat and Himachal Assembly polls, Congress has a reason to worry.
North of the Vindhyas, the saffron blueprint is spreading. The NDA allies rule Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Himachal.
Only Haryana, Jharkhand and Delhi are in the UPA kitty.
