Congress continues to feel the heat of the 1984 riots. Resting after a hectic campaign against Narendra Modi and the BJP in Gujarat, the party was forced to sit up when the Karkardooma court in Delhi asked for a reinvestigation into Jagdish Tytler's role into the Sikh riots.
“We don’t want to comment upon this. This is an ongoing legal process. Earlier too, there have been judgements, proceedings and whatever has been the verdict, everyone concerned including the accused has to abide by the verdict,” said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
It’s little consolation for the Congress that Jagdish Tytler does not hold a post either in the government or the party.
With Gujarat elections out of the way, Congress may not be immediately perturbed about the court's decision. But its image has taken a beating, given that it’s also a party preparing for Lok Sabha elections and is aware that such controversies are best avoided.
The BJP is all prepared to hit out at the Congress.
In fact, during the Gujarat campaign, the BJP's strategy was to counter riot with a riot.
Each time the Congress spoke of the 2002 Gujarat riots, the BJP reminded the party of the 1984 riots.
Never mind the BJP campaign, Congress has some awkward questions to answer. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said that he was moved to tears at the plight of the riot victims.
