CPM blame Congress for failing counter communalism in Gujarat

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat has hit out at the Congress, accusing them of shirking in its duty to combat communalism in the Gujarat elections.

In an article in party mouthpiece People's Democracy, Karat said, "The Gujarat election results underline the necessity for an uncompromising struggle against the Hindutva variety of communalism.

“Such a political platform has to be built up in the state and forces rallied around it. The Congress party, as the main opposition in Gujarat, has shirked in doing so."

Karat said the predominant attitude in the Congress has been to avoid raising anti-communal issues on the plea that it will help the BJP polarise people.

He slammed the approach as flawed, short sighted and harmful.

Karat also took on the Election Commission for what he called "harping on all problems except the central one – of dangers posed by Hindutva.”
