Former President A P J Abdul Kalam yesterday launched the "Total proficiency in satellite and ITC- enabled education" programme, as part of Application of Science and Technology in Educational Reform (ASTER) and enhancing the teaching-learning process in the country.
The programme is a milestone heralding a new leap forward in the Atomic Energy Education Society (AEES) project ASTER as it is planning to train its entire faculty and employees across the country at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) study centre in Kochi on December 16 this year.
Kalam also inaugurated the five-day National conference on science education at Atomic energy junior college and a science exhibition in the Anushakti Nagar colony.
Speaking to the students and teachers, Kalam highlighted the importance of acquiring scientific knowledge as a lifetime mission and the use of these modern technologies to reach out to remotest corners of the country for virtual learning and teaching.
Kalam said it was important for the students to take up science as there were several challenges in the subject. In 2020 there is going to be reduced land, reduced farming community and therefore scientists have to find a way to double or triple the food production to reach billion people.
"Best minds should be attracted to the science cadre of India and have to nurtured and developed," he told the science teachers.
