An LTTE Sea Tiger along with another person have been arrested by police in Chennai. The LTTE man has been identified as Jeyakumar alias Gowrishankar.
Police also confiscated a boat meant to be sent to the LTTE. Jeyakumar is said to have been carrying Rs 4.7 lakh to buy a boat, which was later to be sent to the LTTE.
Meanwhile, gunbattles and mortar fire between soldiers and Tamil Tiger fighters along the front lines in northern Sri Lanka killed 16 rebels, the military said on Sunday.
Soldiers repelled a rebel mortar attack on Saturday, killing 10 guerrillas in Periyathampanai village in the district of Vavuniya, just south of rebel-held territory, a defense ministry official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. Two soldiers were injured, he said.
Four insurgents were killed in a clash in nearby Mannar district, while army troops killed two other rebels who attacked soldiers guarding the front lines in northern Jaffna peninsula, he said.
Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan could not immediately be reached for comment.
Each side in the conflict routinely exaggerates the other side's casualties, and plays down its own. Independent verification is difficult because the area is restricted.
Fighting has intensified in the north near the front lines separating government-controlled areas from the rebels' de facto state since the government announced five months ago that it had cleared the Eastern Province of guerrillas, although small pockets of resistance remain.
