NDTV Exit poll on Gujarat first phase

The battle for Gujarat is now well and truly underway with the first phase of the two-phase poll ending on Tuesday.

Eighty-six assembly seats voted in south Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch, areas where the rebellion against Chief Minister Narendra Modi is the strongest.

As per the Election Commission the voter turnout was pegged at around 50 to 60 per cent.

The NDTV Exit Poll predicts the BJP will get 13 seats less than 2002, while the Congress gains in all the seats.

The BJP is likely to get only 26 seats in Saurashtra as opposed to 39 in 2002. The Congress meanwhile gets 31 as against 18 seats in 2002.

Among the candidates were key BJP rebels who have thrown their weight behind former chief minister Keshubhai Patel. The Saurashtra region is home to Patel who himself did not come out to vote on Tuesday
