The opposition Pakistan People's Party has said the new Parliament formed after the January 8 polls will review all constitutional amendments made during President Pervez Musharraf's rule and can consider impeaching him.
Senator Latif Khosa, head of the PPP's election monitoring cell, said Musharraf had "defaced" the 1973 constitution and it was strange that the retired general was providing "protection" to his own actions.
The new Parliament could impeach Musharraf if he did not restore the constitution to its original shape and failed to develop a working relationship with Parliament, said Khosa, a confidant of PPP chairperson and former premier Benazir Bhutto.
"The opposition can consider impeaching the president if it secures two-thirds majority in the next parliamentary setup," Khosa told a press conference in Islamabad on Sunday.
If the opposition gets a majority, then all "anti-democratic" constitutional amendments made by Musharraf would be repealed, he said.
Khosa was critical of recent amendments made by the President to provide legal cover to his steps during the emergency rule that ended on Saturday.
Musharraf had subjugated all state institutions by making unprecedented constitutional amendments and it would be unacceptable for the PPP if he continued to have powers such as those for dissolving the Parliament and the authority to appoint the military chief, he said.
