Days after The Indian Express first reported that Bunty Pandey and his gang had threatened Shah Rukh Khan and asked him to cough up Rs 2 crore, the Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of the Crime Branch gunned down two men, suspected to be members of the Pandey gang, in Powai, a north-eastern suburb in Mumbai.
Officers from the AEC intercepted two gang members today travelling in a Maruti 800 moving towards Customs Colony, Powai, where the police had laid a trap. Identifying themselves, the police said, the officers ordered the two to surrender but claimed they were fired upon.
The officers shot back in retaliation, police claimed, injuring the two who were taken to the Rajawadi Hospital where they died.
Confirming the encounter, Deven Bharti, Deputy Commissioner of police, Crime and Detection, said, “Bunty Pandey is a small-time criminal who specializes in kidnapping. Much is not known about him but our intelligence says these two shooters were sourced from UP. We got our information today and we acted on it swiftly.”
Pandey’s gang is also said to have sent men to Shah Rukh’s house to threaten him. Following this, security was beefed up at the star’s Mannat residence.
The senior police inspector of Anti-extortion cell, Vijay Salaskar said, “We have identified Ram Sahai alias Doctor as one of the two gang members. The other is still unidentified. Sahai has cases against him registered in Uttarakhand, UP and Gujarat.”
