A fight is going on between the Congress and BJP about which day should be celebrated as Vijay Diwas Day. And caught in this political crossfire are the families of the martyrs who are being made the victims of another needless war.
It's perhaps the worst tribute from our politicians to the soldiers who died fighting the threats India faced.
The Congress and BJP are pitted against each other on deciding which day to be officially celebrated as Vijay Diwas. Whether December 16, the day our soldiers defeated Pakistan in the 1971 war or the Kargil victory on July 26, 1999.
On July 26, the families of those who died in the 1971 war are left alone and on December 16, it's the turn of the families of the Kargil martyrs.
Captain Praveen Davar (retd) Secretary, Congress ex-servicemen cell said, ''Kargil win was a smaller achievement compared to the 1971 win. It is the biggest win in the last 5,000 years.''
''After 47, Kargil war was true valor,'' argues BD Mishra, in-charge, BJP ex-servicemen cell.
When the NDA was in power, Kargil day was the official Vijay Diwas but after the UPA took charge, it went back in time and December 16 became the day of national pride. As a result, the nation remains confused.
''For a soldier every war is same. It asks for sacrifice, for blood, how can two wars be differentiated,'' asks Major (retd) TC Rao, ex-serviceman.
Former soldiers say wars happen when politicians fail. But ironically, after the wars it is neither nations nor its soldiers but politicians who claim to be the winners.
