SUVs galore: Bigger is better

The people's car, Nano might have hogged all the limelight but if you like your car big, the focus of the Auto Expo was five new SUV's or sports utility vehicles.

The expected weekend rush at the Auto Expo, from the bikes to the sports cars, the fair has it all. But apart from the small cars, what is really making noise are the Sports Utility Vehicles or the SUVs.

Five have been launched till now from the Tata, Mitsubishi, General Motors and Hyundai stable.
First the Chevrolet Captiva, the SUV is being launched to take on the Honda CR-V and Mitsubishi Pajero and with a price tag of under Rupees 18 lakh, it is a bit easier on the pocket. Those who are driving GM cars swear by the company's brilliance.

But not one to be left behind, Mitsubishi has launched its own SUV, which is cheaper than the Captiva. In a price range of 15 to 20 lakh, the Outlander has a 2.4 Litre engine. And for the high-end buyer, there's the Montero, priced close to 40 lakh.

Hyundai is also gearing to go with the Santa Fe, a car that has done well in the American market. It will give the Terracan company on the Indian roads, has a 2.7 litre engine and is slated to have a fuel efficiency of about 11 to 12 km per litre. And it is likely to be priced between 20-25 lakh rupees.

It's been all about the Nano for the Tatas but apart from the 1-lakh car, the company also come out with the Sumo Grande, the people's SUV, if one compares it to the SUVs we just mentioned. Priced between 7 and 9 lakh, it is the more stylish version of the rustic Sumo with better interiors and all the frills.
