Sonia steps in for damage control in Goa

The Congress government in Goa is making desperate efforts to stave off a crisis after four MLAs, including two NCP ministers, withdrew support on Wednesday.
To buy time, the Goa cabinet prorogued the assembly session and firefighting efforts are now shifting to Delhi.
Goa CM Digambar Kamat, his Finance Minister Dayanand Narverker and senior Congress leaders arrive for talks with party president Sonia Gandhi. NCP MLAs, however, are staying put in Goa and have so far refused to change their mind despite their central leaders giving an assurance to the Congress.
The revolt was triggered by independent MLA Vishwajeet Rane, son of former Congress Chief Minister Pratap Singh Rane.
Meanwhile, NCP MLAs have so far stood their ground despite their central leaders giving an assurance to the Congress. The party has now given a list of demands to the Congress as a condition for defusing the crisis and these include better portfolios and an additional ministry.
NCP leader Praful Patel says he hopes the crisis will be resolved soon.
