Vigilante justice brings shame to AP

A day after a woman in Warangal in Andhra Pradesh was stripped and thrashed by a mob who accused her of murder, not a single arrest has been made by the police.

Mob fury and the horror of it will haunt her forever as the 26-year-old Emily lies battered in a hospital bed.

The mob stripped her; beat her in front of a hundred staring eyes and none of them showed any sign of remorse. The villagers have accused the woman of murdering her husband with the help of her lover.

On being asked whether someone should have helped her, one of the onlookers said, ''She was being punished and when she was escaping punishment, they pulled her back by the hair.''

The police have not made a single arrest and the whole ordeal lasted an hour with almost the whole village as witness to it.

''The cremation of Emily's husband just took place. We will arrest them in a day or two,'' said Sai Narsa Reddy, Deputy Superintendent of Police.

This is the third such shameful and unacceptable incident of mob justice in Andhra Pradesh in the last one month.

A few days ago, a man in Karimnagar was tied upside down from a tree and beaten up for stealing a motor. And a lady doctor was assaulted while on duty because a patient alleged she delayed in giving treatment.
