Mustaq Sheik, the son of Gujarat's infamous underworld don Abdul Latif Sheik, has now joined the Sangh Parivar. He says he's doing it to promote communal harmony.
Dawood Ibrahim's pointsman in Gujarat, Sheik Sr had achieved a near Robinhood status in the 80s and mid 90s, before he was killed in an encounter.
But his 31-year old son, Mustaq, seems to have chosen a radically different path from his father's.
He has joined the Rashtrawadi Muslim Manch, a nationalist outfit affiliated to the RSS
“I have nothing to do with my father’s work. What I'm doing now is just for the sake of nationalism,” he says.
Mustaq says he is “following the true teachings of Islam” by joining the outfit. He says the Rashtrawadi Muslim Manch preaches communal harmony through nationalism and denounces terrorism.
The organisation is active in 22 states. And toeing the Sangh Parivar line, it is also pressing for the cow to be declared a national animal.
Says Gujarat RMM President, Yasin Ajmerwala, “Islam says that it's our duty to protect the country we live in. Sudershanji praised us for our work and pledged support to our activities."
