NEW DELHI: Assembly polls will be held in Karnataka by the end of May, the Election Commission on Thursday decided, ending speculation that they may be deferred.
A meeting of the full Election Commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy decided to conduct the elections before the expiry of President's rule on May 28, EC sources said.
The polls would be held as per the re-drawn constituencies, they said, adding the schedule would be announced later.
Sufficient hints on early polls came last week when the electoral authorities in the state said that they had completed the process of delimitation of 224 assembly constituencies in Karnataka in a "record period of two weeks".
The polls in the state, which is under President's rule since November 20, will be held before the expiry of the Central rule on May 28, the Commission sources said.
They said the Commission has decided to invoke Rule 24 of Registration of Electors Rules in the Representation of People Act (RPA) for going ahead with the conduct of the polls.
