Russian women molested in Mumbai

MUMBAI: A 23-year-old teacher from Russia who had arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday was molested by the driver of the cab she had hired to travel to her friend's Juhu residence from Vile Parle.
Laura Mansoorovna, who had been vacationing in Goa for three months on a tourist visa, arrived in Mumbai by bus on Wednesday morning and alighted near the domestic airport. From there she hired a cab to take her to Juhu. The driver, Sayyad Qayyum Hafeez (left), drove her around for three hours. Finally, on nearing her friend's apartment, Hafeez told her he was tired and wanted a kiss. Even before a shocked Laura could react, he pulled her close and kissed her thrice.
"We have booked Hafeez under Section 354 of the IPC for molestation. He will be produced before a local court on Thursday," senior inspector Deepak Katkade said. Hafeez (42) is married and is a resident of Kurla. The police have also seized his taxi.
Laura was on her way to the residence of her Russian friend Alexandra, who lives at Neel-Sheel apartment in Juhu with her Indian husband Warren D'Souza. The teacher from Moscow had spent the last three months at the D'Souza family's farmhouse at Morjim Pernem in Goa. The D'Souza couple had joined her for a while but returned to Mumbai last week. Laura planned to see them before flying back home on Thursday morning.
"Laura comes from an educated and cultured family and is stunned by the incident," a neighbour and political activist from Juhu, Suresh Shah, said. "She had boarded the cab at about 10.15 am but soon realised that Hafeez was taking her for a ride. She called up Warren, but he didn't answer as he was asleep," Shah said. When Warren woke up and saw her missed call, he immediately called her back. He also spoke to Hafeez and gave him directions to reach his apartment. Finally at about 2.30 pm, Hafeez pulled into the Old Police Station Road where the D'Souzas live.
