Shivani Bhatnagar murder verdict today

A Delhi fast track court will give its verdict in the Shivani Bhatnagar case on Tuesday. Shivani, a reporter with the Indian Express was found murdered in her flat in East Delhi nine years ago.

It took the police over three years to crack the case, the main accused, an IPS officer Ravi Kant Sharma, was then an Inspector General of the Haryana Police.

The fate of Sharma, now suspended, and five other accused is likely to be decided by the court in Delhi, which saw 51 out of 209 witnesses turn hostile.

Sharma is in custody after dodging the police for nearly two months, his bail was rejected four times after which he gave in. Police claim he plotted Shivani's murder.

He is facing trial for allegedly conspiring with five others - Sri Bhagwan, Ved Prakash Sharma, Pradeep Sharma, Satya Prakash and Ved alias Kalu.

The investigative journalist's body was found at her home in east Delhi. Her baby, only two months old was found crying.

Police say Shivani and Sharma had a close relationship and she was putting pressure on him to marry her.

According to the prosecution, RK Sharma in his capacity as OSD at the PMO between July 1997 and April 1998 had leaked classified documents to the deceased journalist.
