PANAJI — If the weather conditions currently existing in the Indian Ocean and around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands region do not change substantially, then Goa will experience full-throated monsoon from the first week of June, to be precise from June 5/6.
Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, the in-charge of the state meteorological observatory, Mr K V Singh on Monday said that this year the monsoon has set 10 days ahead of the normal annual calendar.
“It has already set in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands region on May 10,†he informed, adding that the 10-day advancement of the monsoon has been due to the favourable conditions.
However, Mr Singh said the monsoon would only advance to Kerala by May 29, instead of June 1 as observed annually. He predicted that Goa could experience pre-monsoon showers during the last week of May.
Informing about the Goan summer this year, Mr Singh said the summer has been normal, with a maximum temperature recorded up till now being 37 C as on May 9. “The recent highest temperature recorded during the summer was 38.6 C, in the year 2004, while the all-time high temperature in Goa was recorded in the year 1989, standing at 39.8 C,†he stated.
Mr Singh informed that a computerised doppler weather radar will replace the existing radar within a year’s time.
A doppler radar is a radar, which using the doppler effect of the returned echoes from targets, measure their radial velocity. Such weather radars process velocities of precipitations by Pulse-Doppler Radar Technique, on top of their intensities.
