FM invokes China to push nuke debate

The day two of trust vote started on Tuesday with Finance Minister P Chidamabaram's speech in Parliament.

In an interesting development the finance minister referred to China in his debate and said that there are some people in this country who don't want India to catch up with China.

He gave China's example that it is investing heavily in nuclear energy to put forth government's stand on the nuke deal.

Chidambaram also said: ''I don't envy China, but I want India to become an economic superpower. We can compare India only with China, not nations smaller or bigger than us.''

Lashing out at the opposition to nuclear deal Chidambaram said that no one is clear about Left's stand on nuke deal.

Lashing out at the Left he said that NDA says it will renegotiate the 123 Agreement, yet the Left is voting with them.

Transparent deal

The Finance Minister said that the UPA government has been transparent on the nuclear deal with the United States.

He asked the Opposition, ''Why did NDA not have a scheme like our rural job scheme?''

He further said, ''Show me any four years in Independent India when so much has been done.''

The Finance Minister said that India achieved growth close to 9.1% in 2008 and the country witnessed record agricultural production in 2007.
