You would expect a Mumbai-based model to start off and establish herself with item numbers initially in Kollywood, but Sandhya Shetty is a tad different.
Though her first film in Tamil - 1977 with Sarath Kumar - will have her in a song sequence “that plays a vital part in the film,” she expects filmmakers here to offer her action-oriented roles. “I would love to do action films,” she says enthusiastically.
Now, a usual heroine would think twice before saying that but this model-actress is also a karate champion and hopes that would help her fetch plump roles in Kollywood. “I hear that audiences here are game for different scripts,” says the dusky actress. “When the audience can accept Hollywood heroines doing action films, why not here?” She feels that language is no barrier. “My best friend is Tamilian and her mom makes it a point to talk to me in Tamil!”
Action and dance are two areas that she would like to explore. “South Indian cinema is majorly into these two facets, and that’s what makes it so fascinating,” she says. Though 1977 will be her first foray into Tamil cinema, she has been a regular follower of films. “The other day, I watched a Tamil film in which a young hero — I don’t remember his name — did a brilliant job as an action hero. That's the kind of passion that I would like to exhibit in my roles.”
How did she get into karate? “As I'm tall, I’ve always been into sports like kabaddi. Most of my friends are into karate and introduced me to it. The last four years have been a journey,” she adds. Her latest attraction is to learn Krav Maga, an Italian hand-to-hand combat system. “People tell me that it's better than karate,” she says, “It gives you a great chance to neutralise the opponent.” Learning such self-defence techniques has its advantages, but also some disadvantages.”When I’m modelling or shooting, I let my nails grow but for karate training, I got to cut them and go,” she says.
She vividly remembers acting in the Bengali film titled Kaal that dealt with human trafficking. “The director —he met me somewhere — came all the way from Kolkata to pick me for the lead role. Nobody thought of me as a character artiste seriously but he was convinced that I was apt for the role. It paid off,” she beams. “I love to work with people who are experimental,” says Sandhya, who is eager to watch Dasavatharam.
