
PANAJI — Dr Shivinder Singh Sidhu on Monday took over as the new Governor of the state. He became the 14th Governor of the state when he took oath of office at an impressive but simple ceremony at the Raj Bhavan on Monday.
The governor designate, who arrived a little less than an hour from New Delhi before he took oath, was administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar, in presence of the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat and a large gathering of eminent people from the state.
Earlier, the Chief Secretary of the state, Mr J P Singh read out warrant of appointment of Dr Singh. Soon after he took oath of office the new Governor was given a guard of honour by a contingent of state police force.
The ceremony was also attended by most of the cabinet ministers and ruling coalition MLAs. The Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs, led by Mr Laxmikant Parsekar attended the swearing-in ceremony.
The archbishop, Dr Filipe Neri Ferrao, senior government officials, industrialists, former MLAs, former ministers and freedom fighters also attended the ceremony. The Speaker, Mr Pratapsing Rane and the leader of opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar who are both out of state could not attend the ceremony.
