Gang with fake Indian rupees held in Dubai

DUBAI: Police have intercepted a four-member gang circulating fake Indian currencies and seized two million rupees from them, media reports said here.

Acting on a tip-off, the Dubai CID, on August 5, launched an operation to arrest the Asian gang that was searching for brokers to distribute fake Indian currencies worth two million rupees in the UAE, the Khaleej Times reported.

"An undercover officer, posing as an agent, managed to meet one of the gang members. He convinced the gang member that he was a buyer for the fake currencies. The notes were forged using advanced technologies," the police said.

The officer struck a deal to buy currencies worth one million rupees for USD 16,339. Police arrested gang member, Raj Babankilla, red-handed, when he came with the haul and seized the notes, the newspaper said.

Soon, the police tracked his fellow gang members to Al Muteena area and arrested them. They were identified as Jaya Chandran, Iranian national Hussain Ali Habib and Pakistani national Jol Khan.

Fake currencies worth Rs 900,000 were also seized from their car. During interrogation, the gang members confessed to having brought the counterfeit Indian currencies from an Asian country. The four have been referred to Dubai Public Prosecution.
