Renowned playwright and actor Girish Karnad has been elected as one of the world theatre ambassadors by UNESCO's International Theatre Institute.
The Paris-based organisation has extended this unique honour to about a dozen living artists including British theatre and film director Peter Brook, Italian playwright Dario Fo, French theatrical legend Ariane Mnouchkine and German choreographer Pina Bausch.
Karnad, 70, is considered one of the most outstanding playwrights of contemporary India and his plays have been translated and produced in several languages over the past 40 years.
Karnad has been honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi (1972), Padma Shri (1974) and Padma Bhusan (1992).
