Pakistani gunman Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab surprised everyone in the special court on Friday when he said he wanted to write a letter to
an unspecified recipient in Mecca.
Towards the end of the day's court proceedings, Kasab stood in the dock and told judge M L Tahaliyani, "Sir, mujhe ek lifafa chahiye (sir, I want an envelope)."' He said he wanted to write a letter to Saudi Arabia. When asked if he had any relatives there, Kasab replied in the negative.
On further probing, Kasab said he wanted to write to Mecca, but could not specify to whom it would be addressed or its purpose. Tahaliyani then asked him to consult his lawyer, Abbas Kazmi, and file a detailed plea on Monday.
When he was first taken to the Arthur Road jail, Kasab had expressed a desire to speak to his family. Earlier, he had requested the Pakistani authorities to provide him with a lawyer. "I am not sure who he wants to write to this time. I will have to speak to him and find out,'' Kazmi said.
On Friday, special prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam examined IPS officer Sadanand Date, who had rushed to Cama Hospital during 26/11. Date, who was injured in the attack, said he reached the spot with seven policemen and was involved in a fierce battle with the terrorists on the terrace of the building.
Date also recalled how the terrorists kept lobbing grenades at the cops. Inspector Prakash More and constable Vijay Khandekar were killed in the attack. Date and his men were successful in saving the lives of people stuck on the terrace.
