Madhumita Shukla murder case: four have convicted

Former minister in the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani Tripathi along with two others have been convicted in the Madhumita Shukla murder case.
A special court in Dehradun awarded all four accused life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 each has been slapped on them. The other two accused in the case are Amarmani’s nephew, Rohit Chaturvedi and an acquaintance, Santosh Roy

However, the man who was accused of having actually shot dead Madhumita, Prakash Chandra Pandey, has been acquitted for insufficient evidence — this despite the fact that he was positively identified by one of the witnesses, Madhumita's servant desraj.

It has been a four-year long legal battle for the relatives of poetess Madhumita Shukla.
The case was first being heard in Uttar Pradesh, but Madhumita's relatives — fearing a lack of an impartial trial — moved the Supreme Court seeking a transfer of the case outside the state.
The case was then shifted to Dehradun in neighbouring Uttarakhand, but her relatives allege that despite Amarmani being arrested in 2003, they are under constant threat.
