Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dinsha Patel early on Tuesday was named the Congress candidate to take on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in his pocketborough of Maninagar in a move to give a ''good fight'' to him.
''Dinsha is our choice against Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Not only he has been in public life for a long time, Dinsha also has a very clean image. Modi is no match to him,'' Opposition Leader in Assembly Arjun Modhvadia told PTI.
Patel is a veteran of many a poll battle in the assembly and Lok Sabha and appears to have been selected by the party high command in view of the powerful Patel community which he represents sulking due to style of functioning of Modi.
AICC General Secretary B K Hariprasad had made it clear earlier that Congress would be fielding a politician only to take on Modi and the party candidate would give a ''good fight''.
Patel was chosen as the nominee in Maninagar as a sizeable section of the Central leadership opposed moves to field any relative of Mahatma Gandhi or known Modi detractors like Mallika Sarabhai and some Gandhian leaders on the plea that they could give only a ''token fight''.
Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of the Mahatma, was also approached.
The announcement of Patel came after the party announced almost all the seats for the assembly polls.
