The Rs 10,000 laptop will hit the India market in the next 3-4 months. Chipmaker Intel is working with PC manufacturers to launch these ultra-low cost laptops that will be up to 50% cheaper than the cheapest laptop available in the country.
The laptops that will be launched in the Rs 8,000-12,000 range. Add the duties and the retail price for the consumer would be about Rs 9,640—14,460. This is because laptops attract a countervailing duty of 12.5%, additional customs duty of 4% and value-added tax of 4%. At present, the cheapest laptop in India is priced at around Rs 20,000 by Kolkata-based Xenitis Infotech.
“We are introducing a new value segment with these laptops that would be launched globally but are targeted at BRIC countries. Our 45 nano meter (nm) process technology allows us to put smaller and more chips onto a wafer, bringing down the cost. Our core architecture, with its energy efficiency, allows us to have lower power consumption,” Intel’s marketing and operations director for South Asia John McClure told ET
The laptops are likely to have smaller screens — Seven to 12 inches — and will have slower processors. There would be some compromise on the features front. “These laptops would lack certain features that a first-time buyer would typically not require,” Mr McClure said but refused to divulge further details.
