Kamalesh Sharma first Indian to hold the top post in the Commonwelth

Kamalesh Sharma has been elected Secretary General of the Commonwealth. Sharma will replace Don McKinnon, whose eight-year term as Secretary General comes to an end
Presently High Commissioner to the UK, Sharma is the first Indian to hold the top job in the Commonwealth.

Sharma has no prior experience of the Commonwealth but was widely expected to win having the backing of more than 30 of 53 Commonwealth member states, given India’s growing economic clout in the international areana.

A diplomat of great repute, he's been India's permanent representative to the UN, ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and ambassador in many other countries.

In his race for the coveted post of Commonwealth Secretary General, he faced a fight from his nearest rival Malta's Foreign Minister Michael Frendo. The contest took place on Friday, during the Heads of Commonwealth Summit taking place in the Ugandan capital Kampala.
