Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's government has finally admitted that there were police lapses during the Adivasi rally in Guwahati a week ago.
He has asked for a CBI investigation into the violence last Saturday when one person died and over 250 people were injured.
An intelligence report sent to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi by the state's Special Branch of Police had alerted him of possible trouble at the Adivasi rally in Guwahati a week in advance but it was ignored.
One person died and 250 were injured in clashes between the Adivasis and local residents.
''I have decided for CBI enquiry. Had there been no lapses there would be no need for departmental enquiry or CBI enquiry. There have been lapses. Police lapses I see, administrative lapses I don't see, but the committee will find out,'' said the chief minister.
Meanwhile, the Adivasis have raised the pitch demanding Schedule Tribe status for them.
The tea gardens in Assam have been tense all week. The Adivasis have announced road blockades across the state on Monday.
''This Chief Minister was voted to power with Adivasi votes so he better protect us. We didn't come with the intention to create violence. Some had gone violent but the backlash was so brutal that we can't forget it. We will take our agitation forward democratically and peacefully.
We are from Assam. We are Assamese and our rights are here,'' said Pallab Lochan Das, Adivasi Leader.
