The Centre would convene a Chief Ministers' conference in the third week of this month to discuss the internal security situation and ways to tighten the mechanism against terrorism.
The meeting, likely to be held on December 21, would be addressed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after which the Union Home minister would also present an overall picture of the security situation in the country.
The meeting takes place against the backdrop of serial blasts in courts in three Uttar Pradesh cities last month.
During the meeting, the Chief Ministers would apprise the central leadership about growing militancy and naxalism in their states.
The Centre would ask the state governments to ensure an effective intelligence gathering mechanism as it feels that intelligence was the backbone of any counter-insurgency operation.
