Opposition in the Lok Sabha LK Advani as the party's prime ministerial candidate.
Party president Rajnath Singh made the announcement after a meeting of the BJP's highest decision-making body, the Parliamentary Board, on Monday.
''Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani have been instrumental in bringing BJP to this position. Every party worker accepts this decision. I would like to congratulate L K Advani on my party's behalf,'' said Rajnath Singh, president, BJP.
According to sources, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee endorsed Advani's candidature and the Board unanimously picked Advani for the post.
Advani's nomination was also cleared by the RSS on Sunday night.
''On this occasion all I would like to say is that I am grateful to the BJP President, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and I hope I can do my best to serve the people and the party,'' said Advani.
Eighty-year-old Advani has scarcely concealed his ambition for the country's top job.
He came close to this when Vajpayee made him his deputy prime minister in 2002.
Today's announcement comes just a day before Gujarat, from where Advani has been elected to the Lok Sabha four times from the Gandhinagar seat.
