Lakhs take holy dip, offer prayers on Makar Sankranti

Lakhs of pilgrims took holy dip at the confluence of Gangasagar on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti' on Tuesday.

The pilgrims started taking the holy dip from midnight last night. They then offered pujas at the Kapil Muni temple here.

Official sources said around four lakh people have taken holy dip at the confluence of Gangasagar so far since the beginning of the mela on Sunday last.

Security arrangements in the islands in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district have been strengthened and over 90 people have been arrested for snatching and pickpocketing, sources said.

A temporary police station with a fully-operational control room was functioning and senior police officers were camping in the area, officials said.

Those pilgrims who have taken the holy dip and offered pujas are now returning back, sources said adding very few new pilgrims are arriving to take holy dip.
