Gulzar’s scripts are ‘book’ed

The scripts of two of Gulzar's most thought provoking movies have been brought out in a book released at the World Book Fair. Gulzar saab doesn’t like to be rushed. At the launch of his book, Two Tales of My Times at the World Book Fair, he takes his time, drinking tea with Murli Manohar Joshi, obliging autograph hunters, before sitting down for a chat.

Two Tales of My Times has two of Gulzar’s most thought-provoking scripts New Delhi Times and Maachis in the form of a narrative. “Both films were political statements. Transforming them into a narrative helps to document them for those interested in history as well as cinema,” says the poet, scriptwriter and filmmaker. He plans to bring out a similar book based on the scripts of Aandhi and Hu Tu Tu. “The present generation doesn’t read much but one has to work out a way to reach them,” he says. Gulzar is now working on Premchand’s works for a television serial.

“I’m working on Godaan and Nirmala and 10 other short stories written by him. If people like the serial, that could encourage them to pick up the books,” smiles Gulzar.
