No parts of Scarlettes body missing

The Goa Medical College and Hospital authorities have firmly ruled out possibility of vital organs of Scarlette Eden Keeling, the British teenager who was found dead on the Anjuna beach under mysterious circumstances on February 18, going missing, adding that it was a routine practice under forensic autopsies to remove pieces of vital organs and send them for examination at different places.
The authorities also said that the necessary protocol as required under the ethics and law was followed during the two autopsies carried out on her body at the GMC and that all the parts of her vital organs that were removed for tests, have been preserved after examinations, in the state.
They said that parts of the organs required for examinations were first cut during the first autopsy and sent for analysis. The process was repeated during the second autopsy done almost 20 days later where in histo-pathological examination was also ordered. All the other organs and parts were then placed in the body, they said firmly ruling out that any part was made to disappear or was missing.
The associate professor of forensic medicine, Dr Edmund Rodrigues, who carried out the second autopsy on the body of Scarlette told The Navhind Times that the forensic department plays a role in administration of justice and follow necessary steps as required under law while carrying out autopsies.
We dont destroy anything while conducting postmortems, he said adding that all the vital organs of Scarlette that were necessary for examinations were preserved. He also said that certain organs parts were sent for DNA tests reports of which would take sometime to come.
Meanwhile, highly placed sources in the GMC have said that no consent was required for removal of organ parts for the forensic examinations, as they are carried out on the requests or orders of the police and magistrate to find causes of unnatural deaths, especially under mysterious circumstances.
The sources further said that two types of autopsies were normally carried out at GMC รข€“ the first being the medico-legal (forensic) autopsies and the other being pathological autopsies.
While forensic autopsies help find out cause of death; whether the death of a person was due to murder (homicide), suicide, accident, drowning (in fresh and sea water), as well as sexual assault and that no consent of relatives was required in such cases.
The pathological autopsies are normally carried out when a person dies in a hospital and cause of death was not known. In these cases the consent of close relatives has to be taken before the autopsy was conducted, the sources said.
They further revealed that in the case of Scarlette, detailed examination of the body was done to find out the number of wounds/injuries on the external parts of the body as well as internal, both ante-mortem and post-mortem. Besides, the vaginal swabs and smears were also taken to find out whether there was sexual assault or not.
According to the sources pieces of organs like stomach, liver, kidney, spleen, lungs, brain, and loops were cut for examinations during the two autopsies and preserved. Besides, her blood, urine and stomach contents were also preserved to help investigations and proof during the trial of the case in the court, as and when held.
They also said that the parts were dissected for finding our whether there was haemorrhage and after examination some parts were sent for further forensic and chemical examination while the rest were put back in the opened body.
They went on to add that some parts of the organs were cut and sent to forensic laboratory in Mumbai for chemical analysis and DNA tests and as required under law would be preserved there. While the report of the first samples has already been received that of the subsequent sample would be received in due course of time.
The authorities also said that the chemical tests help detection of consumption and presence of alcohol percentage, narcotic drugs, poison (if any), while histo-pathological examination reveals presence of disease in the organs
