New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil's maiden trip to Latin America has failed to generate the kind of excitement that was seen when she was elected the President.
It was a near empty senate that welcomed her in Brazil on Wednesday, with the President's first international address being attended by only 15 senators. Sixty-six others stayed away.
“It is embarrassing for the people concerned. For the Ambassador and the President to go somewhere and not have an audience,” said former ambassador to Latin America, Dilip Lahiri.
What's worse , two days later, in Mexico, the President was unable to address a joint session of the Mexican Parliament.
President Patil's secretariat was asked to cancel her address at the last minute because of a blockade of the House by the Mexican Left .
The lukewarm response to Patil's trip may have had valid reasons, but it has definitely landed her in an embarrassing position.
Perhaps the President's trip could have done with some better planning and few tips from the PR book of her predecessor APJ Abdul Kalam.
After all, Kalam is a former President who is still drawing a full house on his trips to Peru and Canada at the moment.
