Ranbir, Deepika bag best debutant awards at IIFA


Bangkok (PTI): Newest Bollywood stars Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone were adjudged best debutant actors while "Om Shanti Om" swept a number of technical honours at this year's International Indian Film Academy awards here on Sunday night..
Kapoor got the award for his performance in "Saawariya" while Padukone picked up hers for her role in "Om Shanti Om" which also bagged many technical awards including honours for best special effects and best art direction.
Akshay Kumar was presented with a special achievement award at the glittering ceremony attended by top Bollywood actors.
"I was just a young man when my adventure began here. I was naive, restless and eager to please. This city embraced me with such love and kindness," Kumar said receiving the award.
The other top IIFA awards will be announced later in the night.
The films that are in contention for the coveted best film award are "Guru," "Chak De India," "Jab We Met," "Om Shanti Om," "Life in a...Metro" and "Partner."
The prestigious best director award went to Shimit Amin for "Chak De! India".
The best music director award was bagged by A R Rahman for his music in Mani Ratnam's "Guru" while the award for best lyricist was earned by Javed Akhtar for "Om Shanti Om".
The award for best male playback singer went to Shaan for lending his voice in "Saawariya" while Shreya Ghosal won the award for best female playback singer for "Guru".
The award for best actor in a comic role went to Govinda for his performance in "Partner".
Vivek Oberoi earned the best actor award in negative role for his performance in "Shootout at Lokhandawala" while Irrfan Khan won the award for best actor in supporting role (male) for his feat in "Life in a Metro".
