Orient controversy: Nooyi bats for Tatas

Support for the Tata Group, after it sought an apology from Orient Express Hotels, is now coming from the PepsiCo Chief Indra Nooyi, who says that Tatas should go ahead with their global ambitions, despite the hurdles that come their way.

"Pioneers will face this kind of a problem, Tata should just go ahead and be the trailblazer and for others it will be easier," said Indra Nooyi, CEO, PepsiCo.
Luxury hotel chain Orient Express had earlier rejected an alliance with the Tatas, saying that the association would dilute its brand, which is synonymous with luxury and high-end leisure travel.

Tatas last week sought an apology from the luxury chain and Orient Express has refused to comment on the matter. Tatas, meanwhile, have been garnering support from unexpected quarters. Indra Nooyi while being bullish on the beverages segment in India sounded cautious on global inflation rates saying that the rising grain prices is a major challenge for her company. When asked, Chennai-born Nooyi lend her support to Tata Group's bid for Ford's marquee brands -- Jaguar and Land Rover. She said, "let us look at it as a primary deal. Let them go ahead and blaze the world."Tatas own nearly 10 per cent in the Orient Express and have been keen to develop a global alliance with the Orient Hotel. But with the matter taking an ugly turn, Orient may have to take a second look at how it handles guests looking for an alliance. (With PTI inputs)
